Multi-family offices have become increasingly popular among many successful families. Single-family offices have long been considered a luxury only the very wealthiest of families can enjoy – typically families with at least several hundred million dollars in net worth. Having a dedicated team of investment professionals acting on your family’s behalf – and only your family’s behalf – can certainly seem enticing. However, for high-net-worth families who don’t meet the net-worth threshold to justify a single-family office, a multi-family office can provide many of the same holistic, deeply personalized services (and often more) at a fraction of the cost.
Family offices have a rich history spanning centuries. Many historians trace the lineage of family offices back to 15th-century Italy, where wealthy families like the Medicis relied on trusted advisors to manage their affairs. However, the modern family office as we know it emerged in the late 19th century with the rise of industrial tycoons like the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts in the United States.
Initially, family offices primarily focused on managing investments, taxes, and philanthropic activities for wealthy families. FFOs cater to families who may not require or be able to afford the full suite of services offered by a dedicated family office but still desire personalized financial management.
